“Sighs too deep for words.” That’s all I can come up with.

Sometimes, things happen that are beyond our understanding. Pain. Suffering. Evil. Loss. I suppose there’s a reason that we can’t understand. Anytime I ask the question, I hear a faint voice in the back of my head saying, “Um… did you create this place? Are you in charge? Do you know why things happen the way they do? Sorry buddy… that’s my job.”

Still, though, I want to know the answers. I want to know why… why things happen the way they do. Granted, I know there are miracles that happen. I know that people survive things they shouldn’t or that things happen against all possible odds.

But the questions that linger with me are the difficult ones. Like, why does a hurricane like Gustav have to hit New Orleans nearly three years to the day that Katrina happened? And why are lives tragically cut short sometimes? It all seems so unjust and cruel, and it doesn’t make any sense.

As a Christ follower, I guess that’s where we’re supposed to keep our eyes. Firmly upon him, that is. And hope and trust that, beyond the madness and the chaos and the crap we encounter, there is some sort of holiness. Some form of the divine. Some kind of reasoning.

And that, behind it all, the root of that reasoning mysteriously and graciously loves us.
